A laboratory for education, development and testing of telecommunications
This laboratory (http://alpha.tmit.bme.hu/meresek/) is the main laboratory of the Department of Telecommunications and Media Informatics of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME-TMIT).
The laboratory is placed in three rooms. The laboratory supports the following main fields:
The forms of the practical education are:
The laboratory for programmed laboratory practices
This part of the laboratory consists of a telecommunications sample network and
a local computer network (LAN).
The standard interfaces of the network are connected to more workplaces.
The telecom terminal equiment (TE) (phones, modems, terminals) and
the test sets (for study of the network) can be connected here.
The principal arrangement of the laboratory can be seen in the following picture:

Specifications:
Telecommunications sample network with standard interfaces
The telecommunications sample network includes subnets (PSTN/ISDN, ATM, VoIP, xDSL (ADSL, HDSL, SHDSL))
are built of real (used in practice) switching, transmission and terminal equipment.
The elements of the network are connected via standard interfaces.
The principal arrangement of the telecommunications sample network can be seen in the following picture:

The PSTN, ISDN subnetwork contains mostly devices up to 2 Mbit/s.
The ATM subnetwork contains devices up to 155 and 622 Mbit/s.

- 2 - Digital (ISDN) telephone set with terminal adapter
- 3 - Data terminal
- 4 - IP phone
- 5 - Workplaces (test sets, computers, terminals)
Workplaces
The workplaces are equipped with the following devices:
- Connection boxes
The TEs and the test sets can be connected to the standard interfaces of the network here.
- Test sets
The test sets are a sum of measuring equipment for measuring and/or generating signals of the interfaces.
A test set includes the following devices:
- universal measuring equipment /oscilloscope, multimeter etc./
- telecommunications test equipment
- transmission analyzers
- interfaces testers
- protocol testers
Each test set has a serial /RS232/ or parallel /GPIB/ interface for remote control via a computer (receiving measuring commands from or sending the result back to the computer)
- Telecom terminal equipment, devices:
- Analogue telephone sets
- Digital (ISDN) telephone sets
- IP phones
- Analogue and digital (ISDN, ADSL) modems
- Computers
The main tasks of the computers of the workplaces are:
- Presenting the information about measuring tasks for the students
- Control of certain test steps
- Collecting of the test results
- Reporting of the tests
- Performing certain telecom test functions
The local computer network (LAN):
The main tasks of the LAN related to this laboratory are:
- To store the information about measuring tasks
- To store the test reports of the students
- To connect the documentation devices to the workplaces
- Working as a test object in certain test case
The LAN is an Ethernet network up to 100 Mbit/s.
These practices have been performed by 100 students of the faculty of electrical engineering in a semester.
A part of these practices has been performed by 80 students of the faculty of informatics in a semester.

- 9th semester
This is not an educational but a commercial activity of the laboratory.
The Telecommunications Test Laboratory (http://tvl.tmit.bme.hu/) was created in 2005 in the department
with assistance of the Ministry of Informatics and Communications for testing attachment requirements of user-network interfaces of telecommunications terminal equipment.
We specialized in testing
of loops of high bit-rate data transmission on metallic access cables (xDSL) and
of basic rate (2B+D) and primary rate (30B+D) interfaces of the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) of the several user-network interfaces.
The testing of the interfaces is performed by using newly obtained test instruments.
The automated tests result in short testing time and ensure competitive prices.
This laboratory is accredited by the National Accreditation Board (NAT) and assigned by the Ministry of Informatics and Communications (IHM)
to perform tests according to the following standards:
