ATM interface - Application, services

ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) network is a wide area metropolitan and local network used between network nodes (host, router, bridge) to transmitt IP datagramms and other connectionless traffic.

The interfaces of the network realize the second and third layer of ISO OSI model (data link and network layers).

The ATM network is connection oriented. ATM interface transmitt user data to physical layer in fix length frames, called cells. During the connection setup the user of the ATM network gives the following parameters over to the interface (traffic contract):

Service type (CBR, VBR, ABR, UBR)
Traffic parameters (Peak Cell Rate PCR, Sustainable Cell Rate SCR, Maximum Burst Size MBS, Minimum Cell Rate MCR)
QoS parameters (Cell Transfer Delay CTD, Cell Delay Variation CDV, Cell Loss Ratio CLR)

ATM interface is managable.
